April 3

Well both of my favorite teams won last night, UNC and Villanova so I am in a good mood this evening. So whoever wins, I could care less because I both want them to win, what really has me curious is what the spread is going to be? In the visions world on the other hand all is well. I have been in contact with our party coordinator Rebecca about the details regarding Hells Kitchen and the installation. We have 3 projectors right now but I just discovered my buddy has a projector that we may be able to use.

I am also helping Samantha with the award announcement backgrounds. I have so many animations and found footage at this point it is more about trimming the fat then finding more content. I think I may just go more with the found footage for the installation like the live feed from space, I think it will set a nice atmosphere. The psychedelic ones may give people a heartache. It may be better to sprinkle my animations at certain points rather than have them dominate a screen. I am definetely still gonna have a screen dedicated to George Melies though. Explanation not required.

March 28th

All is well so there is nothing to dwell for the Visions animations. I presented a bunch of my work last week in class so this week was rather chill for me. I wrote down any recommendation from class that I received and this week I am trying to accept or deny some ideas that stays in theme with my visions and the Visions themes.

Since I have found so many found footage shots that are good along with my own animations, I can spread them out to different areas. Like using the psychadelic animation as a background when Sam hands out the rewards. I am also thinking of using my Visions Universe animations for the sponsor slides to make them pop a little more. I really liked how Viriginia did their slides, where each slide was not something different but rather the slides are loop. I cant remember for the best of me what music, Virginia used Ill ask Grace, Michelle, Zoe, Kevin, Rob or Simone maybe they remember.

March 20/ Manual Test

This week I helped Jackson, Mariah and Zoe paint the banner for King Hall. We were low on spray paint so we could not do as good of a job as we wish but I still think it came out good. If visions tries to do a similar thing in the future, I would recommend to use actual paint with a roller instead of spray paint. A Paint roller would look cleaner and more professional.

As for the bumpers, Ive been making constant updates on my Video Race bumper because we keep pushing back the rollout. At first it was the 1st, then the 20th, then the 21st now its the 29th. The one time i decided not to procrastinate it turns out to be the one time when I should. I updated the date today then two hours later I need to update it again. I do not know why I am whining though, it is an easy fix but I am trying to write a paper due tomorrow. I have other things to do and it is not like I can make these fixes on my cellphone.

Installation is coming out nice though I have a little bit of everything to present to the class coming up this week. I have been kind of flying in the blind so far and I am not sure how much of my stuff can be psychadellic trippy stuff and how much needs to be space. But still I have interactive options, live feeds from space, the greatest short epic of al time A Trip To the Moon (1902), found footage, and some animations I made myself.

Questions 1:
For final renders in After Effects, how would you export to render at the best quality?

Answer
In order to get the best render from After Effects it is best to use export as an h264. For presentations and social media it is better to to export as a smaller size. It is best to render all of the final products in premiere to avoid problems.

Question 2:
What elements should be included for each Visions animation?

Answer

UNCW Film Studies Presents, Visions Logo, Visions website visionsffc.org. As for content each bumper should relate to current events such as holidays, visions events and whatever else is relevant.

  1. Name two things that should be in every animation.
    1. www.Visionsffc.org and university of north carolina wilmington presents
  2. What is the time length of a bumper?
  1. 10-15 seconds
My questions are

Q: if a poster is 11”x17”, you would make the canvas size .................? A: 11.25”x17.25 Q2: Director of Art? A2: Michelle Glahn and Grace Combs

march 13

not sure if I was supposed to do a blog post last week. It was break, so I rolled the dice and figured it was not due. Thinking about it now I probably messed up. Other than that though break was dope, went to Burlington and had some job interviews in the city.

As for what I have been up to in visions all is still well. Getting the installations done one step at a time. I currently have two of the installations done and two more to go. I still have to get the first two approved by the class but I feel like they will approve. The first two are more psychedelic while the last two are gonna be mostly space. Like a whole galaxy with shooting stars, meteorshow, supernova, black hole, you know the goods and all that jazz.

I was able to get the video race animaiton in time. I was pretty satisfied by the end result so no complaints there. The soundclip I got of the car matched up perfectly to the animation so I didnt have to do any of that boring stuff trying to make the sound and animation work.

Anyways, I hope that is 200 pages the episode of Vinyl is about to come on.

feb 29th

To try and make the slot machine animation more space themed I have been looking for a clip from a movie to use. The curtains would separate and then it would reveal we were in space. But after going through countless scenes I do not think it is a good idea anymore. In theory it seemed good but in practice it did not hold up.

I have been assigned to do the Video Race Animation now too. I was given a 5 day deadline to come up with one but Grace helped me out and had it pushed back a week. For the design I was thinking of going with a different assortment of cameras each with their own wheels to race. Then there would be like Ready, Set, BoldyGo and the cars skid out. Out of the cloud of smoke the tires make appears the information for the video race, then logo and then we have a wrap.

I also think I came up with another good idea for animation tied to anything. It would be the universe but it would be set up in the way of the characteristic curve. So like at the Toe would be a black hole, 18% would be like Saturn, and the shoulder would be the sun. A light streak would appear revealing the characteristic curve which would inevitably transition into the "S" of Visions as the rest of the title appears. It could come out pretty good plus it has a tie to filmmaking which is always a plus.

(feb. 22nd) Slot Machine and Geofilters

I believe I finally found the perfect machine to use in the bumpers while also promoting pertinent information. The answer is a slot machine. A slot machine is perfect because it is highly recognizable, there is plenty of Billboard space to name the slot machine anything you want like Visions6 Film Festival & Conference Jackpot. Also, slot machines are normally very colorful and always active. This allows me to add small looping animations to make it feel like a real slot machine. But the best part is the act of a Slot Machine. As it reveals new information with every spin. So the way I have this one worked out is that on the first try there is no match as the Visions6 logo comes up, a UFO and either an a conventional Alien or Cosmo. The jackpot though is 04.15.16, the date of Visions which sparks the machine to go nuts with lights and fireworks as you win the Grand Prize.

I have also been working on Geofilters. Since the acceptance rate of Geofilters is only 20% I have been working on up to 10 designs that promote Visions and the Date and some that are only Visions and some that are only the date. I am going to submit 3 today, one with only the date, one with only the V6 logo and one with V6 and the date. Hopefully they are approved by class tomorrow so the class and the rest of UNCW can play with them.

feb 15th

This week I worked on my smart goals, geofilters, and a new bumper. Following one of my smart goals I dedicated 5 hours to the Visions GeoFilters. I first started with reading Devons presentation she gave last semester. Following some of her links I discovered a couple of things. This was a good site https://www.reddit.com/r/snapchatgeofilters/comments/3b3h0h/how_to_design_a_good_geofilter/. IT told me that only 20% of his submissions were approved which means I will have to make a variety of designs. The article stressed the importance of following SnapChat's guidelines, keeping the design simple, and keep it local. Since the skyline I made for the VDAY animation was liked I figured we could use that, Devon's design if she allows us, and whatever else we can think of. I am still trying to find a way to upload an animation/gif as a geofilter. I feel an animation has a better chance to be uploaded.

As for the new bumper, I came to fun realization last class that BoldlyGo, Visions6, and 04.15.16 are all 8 digits. So we could do a fun, quick animation with the letters spinning revealing new information and even add a #.

The new chancellor also donated 10 dollars to Visions at the bake sale for one of my brownies. It was so good that he actually took a second.

VDAY animation Feb. 8th

This week I finished the Valentines Day Party animation. It came out pretty well I think. The color theme was pink and red for Valentines Day. The time was tough especially with the song. I used David Bowies "A Space Oddity" and if the animation could have been like 20 secs we could of had the him sing the whole chorus. But I was lucky to stretch it from 15 to 16, and I guess you just have to make compromises.

Finding a space shuttle launch sound effect was harder to find than I expected. There were a bunch but they all had audio and people cheering in the background. It was difficult to find just a space shuttle lunch. But good old YouTube pulled through. I still need to add the date April 15th to the animation. I keep forgetting good things Grace and Michelle point it out.

The viewings this week were a lot better than the rest. I could of them really stood out and I expect them to make the final screening. There were also a couple of interesting ones which will be interesting when the class begins to debate again. We will see but until then.

Helvetica

The film was really good. I was not expecting a film about typefaces to be exciting, engaging, and intellectual but I was wrong. The film was all of that and more. It covered and interviewed such a wide variety of characters from the industry that the protagonist, Helvetica, as one point Helvetica hailed as the saving hero and the next it is a villain because it wants everything to be the same. It is a really interesting film, at one you love Helvetica, then you hate it, then you kind of love it again because it really is a great font. They have experts that speak with so much love for the font then another that feels the font represents which the companies that support the Vietnam war.

Basically what this film taught me is that never take your typeface for granted. It can either be an anchor or a sail. If you have to incorporate text incorporate it into the art or design the art around the typeface. Do not just think of the words as something you need to place on the canvas but use each letter as a different color to use.

Since the class as a whole have evolved and improved, we are beginning to realize that some of our earlier designs could be better. October seems like a century ago and we have learned new things that we believe can update our look. Improvements are never bad it just means that we have all grown as students and want to improve our previous naive work. So from now on I need to forget Cosmo and try to make the animations seem more realistic and tell more information about the festival. Cosmo was a good idea at first but I feel that he has gotten in the way of the Visions Film Festival & Conference. So from now on all of our animations are going to end with the date of the festival and our website.

As for the animations, this week I worked on the rough draft for the Valentines Day Animation. All is going well the animation part, now I just need to design the animation better. Clean it up, add buildings, trees, grass, stars, and the works. The animation in itself I believe should work our quite well. It has a good feel for Valentines Day. I am still working on the soundscape. I already have most of the sounds for the rocket ship taking off and that sort. However, I am still up in the air of what I want the soundscape to be when the ship leaves the atmosphere and enters space? I am sure I will come up something.

Spring Blog #2- Jan 24

Everything is going good this week. Started to watch some of the films finally. The first film Kevin showed us in class I thought was really good and I hope the rest are at the same level, but I know better. For my next animations the directors want my proposals to be hyper-realistic. So I am looking at some tutorials online and last years archive to try and find some inspiration. Found a couple of idea but nothing concrete yet.

Also watched Helvetica today as was assigned by Shannon. She has been preaching to us since the beginning of the year of the importance of fonts. The documentary was really good though, I find myself analyzing and noticing fonts a lot more on billboard or buildings. Ill save my thoughts of the DVD for the 1 page paper we need to write for it. I have to say though that I look at fonts a whole new way. I also find myself trying to find other businesses that use helvetica, my menu this afternoon used helvetica. Another bit of useless information that is going to plague my mind with the rest of them but at least I have a new game to play in the city.

Spring Blog Post #1 (Jan. 18)

New semester so now I have to start doing these blogs again. Nothing really has changed. Lost a couple of troops in the offseason but picked up some more. Visions team already has all of us working with grading rubrics, making welcome back animations and what ever else they call for. There is going to be a bit of a learning curve for the new Vision staff but we need to be patient and help with whatever they need. They all have talents that can make Visions6 that much better. Like I always say, "The more the merrier."

It is taking me a little while to shake off the winter break dust. I have been falling behind a bit on the animations. However, thanks to Grace she normally has the submission date a week before it Jack post it. So if I am falling behind or procrastinating it still allows the animation to be posted on schedule. The Cinemixer animation came out pretty well, probably would have done a different soundscape if I had more time, but it will do for a 10 sec. animation.

Last thing, I was not expecting our first Visions class meeting to last for 6 hours on the first day since there were no screenings. But like I said before we have new troops in Visions6 so we need to be patient and helpful with any of their needs.
